Chandigarh is a city and union territory that serves as the capital of two states, Haryana and Punjab. The name Chandigarh translates as "The Fort of Chandi". The name is derived from an ancient temple called Chandi Mandir, devoted to the Hindu goddess Chandi, near the city. The city of Chandigarh was the first planned city in India post independence in 1947 and is known internationally for its architecture and urban design.

Chandigarh is famous for its Rose Garden named after India's former President, Zakir Hussain. The garden was established in 1967 under the guidance of Chandigarh's first Chief Commissioner late Dr M S Randhawa. The largest Rose Garden in Asia, it is spread over an area of 27 acres and has more than 17,000 plants representing some 1,600 varieties of roses as well as several fountains.
